Happy Hour Laughter Yoga with Cheryl Weise

What is Laughter Yoga?  Laughter Yoga is a concept that anyone can laugh at any given time without humor, jokes or comedy.  Laughter, real or stimulated has been scientifically proven to make us more energetic and healthier.  Laughter yoga combines laughter exercises with yoga breathing.  We initiate laughter as an exercise in a group but with eye contact and childlike playfulness, it soon turns into real and contagious laughter.

Developed by Madan Kataria, M.D. in 1995.  Forced or fake laughter turns genuine as inhibitions are broken down and individuals relax and have fun with the experience.  There are many mental, physical and emotional benefits attributed to the practice of Laughter Yoga.  Mood elevates.  Stress, depression and tension decrease.  Laughing feels good when done in a group.  No mats required, comfortable clothing and a childlike playfulness are all you need. All are welcome! Class passes can be used or drop in rates apply.

Somatics Workshop: The Science of Getting ‘Unstuck’ PART I

Somatics Workshop: The Science of Getting ‘Unstuck’ PART I

$40

Part I Somatics Workshop with Cheryl Meadors is a pre-requiste for Part II in January.

Do you have back pain that can’t be explained by an MRI? Do you have muscles that always feel ‘tight’? Can you stand up straight without fatigue? Do you carry stress in your body? Are you looking for a sustainable way to relax muscle pain?

The Somatic Nervous System (SNS) controls all the voluntary muscle movements of the body. Unlike the Autonomic Nervous System that controls the body’s vital functions (digestion, circulation, respiration,…), the Somatic Nervous System learns and adjusts based on habituated patterns of muscle use caused by stress, injury, and trauma.

Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA) – This can be experienced as muscles not engaging, muscles not relaxing or both. In this Workshop (Part 1 of 2), we will cover the first 4 lessons on how to move, release then totally relax the muscles of the pelvis, back body, front body and side body.

The pace of Somatic exercises is very slow and mindful so you can perceive the changes you will be creating to the SNS. The entire class is conducted on the floor. Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. All levels are welcome!

It is recommended that you purchase a copy of the book Somatics: Reawakening the mind’s control of movement, flexibility and health by Thomas Hanna. You can find this book on Amazon and it will be your reference for continuing to practice the exercises after the workshop.

Movement Workshop + Live Ambience with Elizabeth Schmuhl and Zachary Swisher

Centered in yogic principals, we will use mindfulness, the breath, listening, and letting go to uncover new and unexpected pathways of movement. Live musical accompaniment will aid us in connecting with our desire to move using task-based prompts as we explore dualities of movement such as delicacy and fierceness, playfulness and seriousness, the seen and the unseen. Some partnering will take place in this class as a means to better connect with the individual, the universal, and the sacred.

Participants are encouraged to bring a notebook and a writing utensil to record new discoveries. We will end class with a simple flow in order to apply new movement and conceptual tools to yoga asana.

$30

Elizabeth Schmuhl is a multidisciplinary artist who has performed in Atlanta with gloATL, worked in NYC at Gallim Dance, and is currently working for Shamel Pitts. She is a dancer, published author, and painter, all disciplines which inform her yogic practice. Elizabeth completed her All-Level Power/Vinyasa 200-Hour Yoga Alliance Teacher Training with Brooke Margherone at Yoga Life in 2016.

Zach Swisher is a noisenik/sound designer who has performed in cities throughout the U.S, and most recently, at the Detroit Institute of Arts. As a former touring musician, he now scores live multimedia performances, makes bedroom pop cassettes, and currently freelances as a Graphic Designer.

Somatics Workshop: The Science of Getting ‘Unstuck’ PART II

5:30 PM17:30

Somatics Workshop: The Science of Getting ‘Unstuck’ PART II

$40

Pre-requisite: Part I Somatics Workshop with Cheryl Meadors

Somatic exercises are learned progressively.  In Workshop 1, you learned to free the muscles of the front body, back body, side body and pelvis enabling improved posture, greater flexibility and reduced back pain.

In this Part II Workshop, Cheryl will help you discover how freeing the muscles first in the center of gravity make it possible to free the movements of the hips, legs and feet.  You will also learn how to move your head, eyes, neck and shoulders independently.  Typical signs of aging include restricted movement of the head and neck along with less ease of movement in the hips and shoulders.  Somatic techniques break down the muscle actions required to walk, turn the head, move the shoulders, twist and breathe deeply.  Activities like golf, tennis, skiing, playing with grandchildren, and hiking, may again be pleasurable. Lastly, we will add to the Daily Cat Stretch routine from Part I which will help you maintain the benefits of what you learn.

As in Part I, the pace of Somatic exercises is very slow and mindful so you can perceive the changes you will be creating to the SNS.  The entire class is conducted on the floor.   Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.  All levels are welcome!

It is again recommended that you purchase a copy of the book Somatics:  Reawakening the mind’s control of movement, flexibility and health by Thomas Hanna. You can find this book on Amazon and it will be your reference for continuing to practice the exercises after the workshop.

In-Depth Training Weekend with Sean Phelps

In-Depth Training Weekend with Sean Phelps

Only a few spots remain-Sign up today!

Sean Phelps began practicing yoga daily 8 years ago on his 30th bday and is now a dedicated ashtanga and movement practitioner.  He has a solid base and rooting under the tutelage of Chad Hamrin (who has been teaching the integration of mindfulness and yoga for over forty years), Kino Mcgregor, and Tim Feldman.

Sean does his best to continually draw our attention to the present moment.  Incredibly aware, methodical, and mindful of not only the 'seat' we take in the room but in daily life as well- as that is what he believes is most important.  Observing the breath, and incessant 'self talk' that we ALL are subject to at many times of the day through a variety of transitions and postures. So, though he does practice and teach the movement and energetics of yoga, Sean is just as dedicated to helping others work through their 'stuff' mindfully,  no matter what level they are at currently.  He believes we are ALL scientists; all we need to do is to learn HOW to pay attention...again, and again-over and over.  Consistent conscious awareness of the breath moving in and out of the body, stilling the fluctuations of the mind no matter what you are faced with on or off the mat. No reaction. Just observance. Expect to be mentally and physically challenged as he covers flexibility, strength, and balance in each and every one of his classes.

Join these 3 days of in-depth yoga training to accelerate your practice!  Learn how to sustain and ignite your inner fire; floating peacefully, mindfully and energetically every second that you’re on the mat.  Alignment tips, techniques and breath work will be covered extensively during all classes.  Those key elements that are practiced and led in nearly every class but, are never quite broken down deeply to where the student actually grows and works powerfully, mindfully and efficiently progressing forward in them.

Full Weekend Intensive $299
or
Single Workshop $69

Electric Flow Yoga with Maria Rosner & Ken Rose

Electric Flow Yoga with Maria Rosner & Ken Rose

$30 Early Bird Price | $35 Day of Price

When electrified, the solid body of a guitar resonates with sound and energy. So, too, the human body. The waves of sound emanating from an electric guitar have been shown to calm the nervous system and balance the subtle body, while creating a collective resonance that connects you to other bodies in the room, not unlike the feeling you get at a concert.

Experience a dynamic sound bath unlike any other in this unique yoga and live music collaboration. Maria Rosner will guide you to move and flow in concert with the ambient sounds of Ken Rose’s electrified guitar. This amplified vinyasa flow experience will transport you into an elevated and joyful level of consciousness as you move into the weekend.

When Maria Rosner isn’t on her mat or teaching yoga, she’s likely at a concert or music festival. She knows firsthand about the potency of the live music experience, especially when electric guitars are involved. Her unlikely collaboration with Ken Rose came about when he noticed her front-row photos on Instagram (from a show with his current band, Hero Jr.). Along with their lifelong passion for music, Maria and Ken found out they were equally passionate about yoga. “Electric Flow Yoga” was conceived when Ken asked Maria to “beta-test” some ambient music he was composing for yoga...and Maria suggested they test it out live instead.

California native Ken Rose has been a working songwriter, producer and touring/studio musician since he was 16 years old. In 1986 Ken moved to Germany where he was signed to Warner Music International as a staff songwriter and producer. In addition to Warner Music, Ken has held long-term staff-writing positions at EMI Music, BMG Music, Famous Music Corp. and Sony / ATV. Ken began working in London in 1998 and moved into his North London studio at Livingston in 2003 where he produced numerous records and ran artist development for his record label. In 2007-2008, Ken was Marianne Faithfull’s guitarist on TheSongs Of Innocence and Experience world tour. In 2012 Ken returned to America to join his band Hero Jr. and has been on the road playing over 700 shows in the last 7 years. Ken is experienced in all styles of music, specializing in outside-the-box / emotional approaches to blues, experimental instrumental, and rock, and in all genres as a songwriter, producer and arranger. Ken has been a Reiki master/teacher since 2003.

Crystal Healing Sound Bath with Heather Fox

$20

OR

For Full Weekend of Workshops with Heather $189

During this Sound Bath experience, crystal sound bowls are played in a way to promote a more relaxed mind and nervous system. The sounds guide listeners on a journey of self discovery and inner exploration, promotes deep relaxation and peace, expansion of consciousness, and helps to open the body’s entire energetic system. We will incorporate intention setting and the use of crystals during the sound bath to help you have a more expanded experience.

During a sound bath participants relax in a comfortable position, usually laying on their backs. One can get much more out of the sound bath if they stay present, yet relaxed. Each sound bath experience is unique – sometimes more physical sensations are felt, other times it feels like an emotional journey, and other times people will see colors, shapes, or images similar to a waking dream. Occasionally the sound bath will activate the higher mind and people will receive creative insights, or work out issues they couldn’t solve prior.  Generally, a deep state of relaxation of the body and mind is achieved and most people look and feel brighter and more relaxed after a sound bath.

(pronounced “ray-key”)

Reiki I is a certification Course (Reiki I certification is a pre-requisite to Reiki II)

Reiki is the Japanese word for “Universal Life Energy.” This energy is all around us and we can channel it. It flows through the hands of the trained practitioner to accelerates the body’s natural healing process. A Level 1 Attunement is a gentle introduction to the energy. While Reiki works on all aspects of being (physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual), at Level 1 the energy appears to work most prominently on the physical level. Once attuned, Reiki can be given to the self or others present by laying hands on the recipient.

Reiki was discovered by Mikao Usui, a scholar from Kyoto, Japan in the 1920s. It was passed down to Chujiro Hayashi, a medical doctor, who trained Hawayo Takata, the Japanese-American woman who introduced Reiki to the United States.

In this class you will learn:

  • How to confidently deliver effective Reiki treatments for yourself, family, friends, and pets.

  • How to use Reiki to manifest goals and intentions

  • How to use Reiki to improve immune function

  • How to use Reiki to prepare someone for surgery (prepare their mind and body in order to heal faster.)

  • How to customize each Reiki treatment to fit anyone’s (human or animal) needs

  • How to scan the human energy field and chakras (energy centers)

108 Sun Salutations for Summer Solstice 2019

In eastern philosophy the number 108 is considered a number that represents a complete cycle and is the ultimate end of an event or phenomenon. So, for this reason it is common to do 108 rounds of something meaningful to you on auspicious occasions.

As a community, we will practice 108 Sun Salutations to honor this powerful ritual and tradition. We practice this repetition with focus and intention. Just as any repetitive task in life can lead us to boredom and restlessness, we can learn how to come back to our intention and physically work mindfully and smarter, rather than harder, which are all great lessons for ourselves as we move into the heat of Summer. We will finish with a brief meditation letting the lessons we learn on our mat this day resonate within us.

You don't have to practice all 108 Sun Salutations, your presence is enough. All- Levels welcome :)
Class passes may be used or drop in rates apply.

Pranayama: The fourth limb of Yoga workshop

$20

This workshop will focus on our breath and the power it holds. The practice of breath control is the fourth limb of the eight limbs of Ashtanga yoga.

Prana is the universal energy that flows through us and everything around us. This energy creates, sustains, and destroys because it permeates everything and is considered the "breath of life".

Pranayama practices manipulate this force within us creating profound shifts in the mind and energy of the body. Most of us are familiar with Ujjayi breath, but in this workshop, we will explore various pranayama techniques to unlock the potential you hold and elevate your physical yoga practice.

We will focus on:

*Breakdown of the 4th limb

*Koshas: 5 layers of Being

*Pranayama techniques

*How to integrate pranayama into our existing practices and lives

Tuesday evenings from 5-6pm | April 2nd - 30th

Join your Yoga Life community to dive into the philosophy of our 8 limbed practice and bring more of a Yogic approach to your life!

Knowing "why" we do what we do, helps put meaning or intention behind our action. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali do just that. These 5 weeks of studying the sutras will be solely focused on the foundation. We will cover as much of the book as we can and leave plenty of room for discussion and sharing. We will use the translation by Sri Swami Satchidananda, which is available for purchase in-studio. It is beneficial to have your very own copy to highlight and/or take notes in. A journal and pen are good to have too.

When we can more deeply understand the purpose behind the practice, our time on our mat has more meaning. All are welcome - no yoga or sutra experience required. Regular class rates apply. Class pass may be used.

Spring Reset: A Restorative Yoga Workshop

$30

Restorative yoga offers us a unique opportunity to rest the body, mind and spirit. Through the use of various yoga props, the body is effortlessly supported allowing you to hold the poses longer, breathe clearer and relax deeply and completely. Different from Yin yoga, where stress is placed on the body in a passive way, in restorative there is nothing to do but allow yourself to literally “settle in”. Through stillness of the body, awareness moves with ease and from the depth of your awareness, your inner voice speaks.

Join Lisa in this workshop to understand the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS), how it impacts the body, and the effects of deep relaxation and silence on the PSNS. After an introduction to the Restorative purpose, use of props, and the postures, Lisa will take you through a restorative sequence designed for basic relaxation. You will leave feeling relaxed, renewed, and educated on why restoring yourself is a vital tool we all need.
